LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS

Developing a Vision

Hello Sheeba,

If the New Year has you dreaming big about the possibilities and opportunities that 2020 might bring, you may want to follow these guidelines for how to take a vision into reality.

Write your vision down. The natural first step to organize any intentions, are to put them on paper. Thoughts in our head can feel vague, but writing them down makes them tangible and it allows you to think through the steps necessary to achieve the vision.

Clarify your vision. Once you have your intentions and strategy in order, you can clarify the purpose and the bigger picture. Why does this matter? How will this improve your business? Who will need to be involved?

Communicate your vision.  Now that you have all of your thoughts organized, a plan, and a purpose, you will need to discuss your vision with your team, effectively creating a shared vision for the upcoming year. Remember to convey the impact this will have for the entire team. People need to know how they are connected and important to the vision you are sharing.

When you do move forward with presenting your vision, don't forget to listen and be open to feedback. Developing a shared vision is a collaborative effort, and when done correctly, it can be a great way to get the new year started off with a sense of inspiration and cohesiveness.

LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT

Michael Atkins

Due to a desegregation effort in his community, Michael Atkins spent his grammar school years busing to a predominantly white neighborhood where he was subjected to an unfortunate amount of discrimination.

Atkins wanted to use his experience to benefit the next generation, so as an adult, he applied for a teacher’s aide position with the school district. He was given a job as the custodian instead.

Throughout the years, he worked his way up through the system, taking college classes and promotions as they came.

On June 1, 2019 Atkins was made a principal, and his leadership style includes bridging the racial gap through diversity promotion and professional development courses available to his staff - including the custodian.

Leadership is having the desire and ability to develop and grow in your response-agility to people and situations you find yourself in every day.
