Leadership: Take Time to Rest
Hello Sheeba,
Do you ever feel burn out at work, anxiety, or even physically sick and unmotivated? I have heard from many leaders on how it has become easier during this time of remote work to disengage.
Rest is something that society finds hard to do especially depending on your culture and upbringing. It is almost frowned upon in the workplace, while being busy and working long hours can somehow indicate loyalty to the team.
However, rest is KEY and we must allow ourselves to relax, renew and recharge. Some benefits of doing this include:
Improved Physical Health: When you are constantly feeling stressed out, your body is at risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to the stress hormone, cortisol, can contribute to anxiety and depression.
So, take time to listen to your body, and give your mind and body the break it needs.
Enriched Quality Time with Loved Ones: Life is too short to spend it working all the time and not building relationships with the people you love. A break and vacation can be a chance to reconnect and spend time with family and friends.
Increased Productivity at Work: When you take time to step back and get away from work, you often come back with a fresh perspective. This can help you tackle things that stumped you before and bring fresh eyes to a situation, creativity to foster innovation, and renewed energy to do the work.
Making rest a priority in your work life may be counterculture but it so important. There are so many benefits to clocking out and taking that long overdue vacation. Don't feel guilty for allowing yourself to rest in a busy world. It may be the best thing you can do for your work and personal life.
